Business networking is critical for commercial success. Being able to meet with other business owners, exchange knowledge, and build partnerships significantly enhances your chances of success. However, not all networking approaches are the same, as we discuss below. In fact, there are quite a few options to explore.
Business Networking Definition and Benefits
Business networking occurs when you meet other professionals or business leaders for mutual advantage, often in social settings. The purpose of this networking can be anything from discovering new information to creating joint opportunities. Essentially, it’s what you make of it.
The benefits of business networking include:
Business growth opportunities (like feedback on product ideas or connections to key people who can drive the business forward)
Deeper relationships with carriers and suppliers with the potential for preferential treatment
Meeting new clients and setting up sales
Ability to develop social skills in high-powered settings
Types of Networking
As you explore business networking options, you’ll find there are several types. These vary a lot, each offering something a little different.
Formal and Structured Networking
Formal and structured networking usually takes place within an existing professional association or institution. For example, the London Chamber of Commerce sometimes has meetups. However, they may also occur via referral networking groups like BNI, which are convenient for weeding out unproductive opportunities.
Informal and Casual Networking
Informal and casual networking, by contrast, is the opposite. It doesn’t operate under any formal structure.
The most common form of this type of networking is informal meet-up events, often organised on social media. Some companies will do breakfast and drinks events if they think they’ll drive attendance.
Event-Based Networking
Event-based networking is perhaps the most natural type of networking because it is a byproduct of conferences and trade shows. Here, the event has a purpose of its own, and social interactions are simply weaved into the schedule to add even more value.
Online Networking
Lastly, online networking events in your industry can be helpful if you’re on a budget, unable to travel, or want to meet with people internationally regularly.
Virtual events are where you meet people virtually via group or a Zoom meeting. You can also network on conventional internet forums or WhatsApp/Facebook groups, though the value may be lower than meeting people in person.
Decide What Is Best for You
The best way to network is to go where your audience is. For example, if you know all your prospects are going to be at a trade show, go there. Don’t try to meet them in formal networking groups requiring monthly subscriptions they don’t pay for.
Also, choose environments where you feel comfortable. Effective networking is all about feeling natural while also presenting yourself and your business in the best light.
We’ve listed some example networking groups below, so you can explore your options:
